Coffee & Conservation – Eyes on Seagrass with Kate Rose
May 19, 2026
Englewood Chamber of Commerce
Join us for May’s Coffee & Conservation as we welcome Kate Rose, UF/IFAS Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent for Charlotte County, for an in-depth look at seagrass health and community-driven conservation efforts.
About the Speaker
Katherine “Kate” Rose has served as the Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent for Charlotte County since 2022. A University of Florida graduate (Bachelor’s and Master’s), Kate brings a diverse background in marine science, including sponge restoration, disease ecology, finfish aquaculture, and crustacean fisheries.
Her current work focuses on connecting science with the community through programs like the Florida Master Naturalist Program, Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch, and Eyes on Seagrass.
About the Presentation
Seagrass is one of the most important ecosystems in Florida’s coastal waters, but it’s declining statewide. Increased nutrient runoff, sediment pollution, heat stress, and algal blooms are all contributing to the loss.
Kate will share insights from Eyes on Seagrass, a volunteer-based monitoring program that started in Charlotte County and has since expanded across Florida. This program empowers everyday participants to help track seagrass conditions while building awareness and stewardship.
You’ll learn:
- Why seagrass is critical to local ecosystems
- What’s causing its decline in Florida waters
- How community data is shaping conservation efforts
- How you can get involved locally
