How to Paddle a Tandem Kayak (Without Getting Divorced)
Tandem kayak aka “riding the Divorce-yak” is either an unforgettable bonding experience… or a dramatic reenactment of every argument you’ve ever had. But with a little preparation (and a healthy sense of humor), it can be a wonderful day exploring Florida’s coastline. Especially if you’re paddling in the waters of Englewood, Florida.
At SUP Englewood, we’ve seen families, couples, and best friends all conquer (and occasionally get conquered by) the tandem kayak. We’re here to help you master the art of tandem paddling, preserve your relationships, and maybe even get a few dolphin sightings in along the way.
Why Paddle a Tandem Kayak in Englewood, Florida?
Here in Southwest Florida, tandem kayaking isn’t just a workout, it’s access to a world of coastal beauty. You’ll paddle past manatees, dolphins, roseate spoonbills, and even the occasional eagle. Whether you’re staying in Port Charlotte, Venice, Boca Grande, or right here in Englewood, tandem kayaking is a must-do.
- Don Pedro Island State Park – mangrove tunnels and undeveloped beaches
- Great Calusa Blueway – clear waters and beginner-friendly routes
- Placida Fishing Pier – ideal for rentals and tour delivery
Choose Your Tandem Kayak Partner Carefully
You can paddle with your spouse, teenager, or bestie — but be honest about your patience levels.
- The Leader: Sits in the back. Steers, stabilizes, and damage controls.
- The Pacer: Sits in the front. Sets the rhythm and gets splashy if out of sync.
- The Wildcard: Should probably bring snacks.
Who Sits Where?
- Heavier or experienced paddler: Goes in the back.
- Lighter paddler or child: Goes in the front.
- Children under 14: Must paddle with an adult per Florida law.
Learn to Paddle in Sync
If you paddle out of sync, you’ll go nowhere (except maybe in circles). The front paddler sets the pace, the back paddler follows and steers. Try counting out loud or singing a rhythm to stay in sync.
Pro Tip: Our guided tandem kayak tours include a dry land demo so you don’t have to figure it out mid-paddle.
Steering, Stopping & Spinning
- Turn right: Back paddler strokes on the left.
- Turn left: Back paddler strokes on the right.
- Stop: Back-paddle or drag your paddle.
Communication Is Everything
Avoid shouting. Instead, use short, clear phrases like “Switch sides,” “Slow down,” or “Take a break.” Remember: you’re here to enjoy the view, not win a race.
Know Your Weather (and Wind!)
Always check the marine forecast. We recommend paddling when winds are under 15mph — especially near Boca Grande where winds can funnel directly into the launch site.
